The Night Watchman

March 13, 2009 (9:30 p.m.)

We just finished our night time tour of Rothenburg with the Night Watchman. It definitely lived up to its billing. We spent an hour walking around the town with our bearded guide, dressed in a black cloak and hat, and brandishing a long staff/weapon that looked like it could do damage to a human being and/or beast in many kinds of ways.

In his heavy German accent, Hans Georg Baumgartner captivated us all with his humor and his extensive knowledge of the history of this ancient medieval city. It was definitely eerie, almost spooky, listening to his stories as we walked together in the darkness, our steps lit only by his lantern and the dim light from a few streetlamps and windows along the way.

We learned about the duties of a night watchman; the history of some of the buildings that have been around for hundreds of years; the purpose of the wall and gates; the details of the great plague that killed one-third of Europe; the story of how Rothenburg was once conquered by General Tilly and the Imperial Catholic Army; and much more. As a matter of fact, there is so much we’d like to share with you about the history of this city that we bought a DVD narrated by the Night Watchman that we will gladly share with anyone who is interested.

Please pray for us as tomorrow morning we leave to visit a very tragic site – the Dachau Concentration Camp. I visited this place once before when I was 15-years-old and I will never forget what I saw there. I am blessed to have never lived through such tragedy and I hope by the grace of God that nothing like it ever happens again.

Good night…
